When To Seek Dental Emergency Care?

A trained professional should see the dental emergency as soon as possible. Not addressing these conditions may worsen pain, infection, or permanent damage. You need emergency dental treatment:

  • Excessive or recurring toothache
  • Swollen gums
  • Knocking
  • Sudden mouth or jaw trauma
  • Dental abscess or pus collection
  • Uncontrollable bleeding

If you are uncertain whether your situation qualifies as an emergency, do not wait. Call our office for guidance. In many cases, early care can make a significant difference in preserving your oral health.

Immediate Care for Common Dental Emergency Conditions

Our team is ready to manage a wide range of immediate dental conditions, including:

1. Toothache

  • Throbbing, sharp, or persistent tooth pain usually indicates underlying infection or decay. Start by rinsing your mouth with hot salt water to wash the area. Over-the-counter painkillers, such as acetaminophen, will reduce the pain until you get there. Do not use aspirin, especially around the gums.

 2. Knocking teeth

  • Act fast. Handle the tooth by the crown (top), not the root. Gently rinse without rubbing any debris. If possible, start it again in the socket and hold it in place. If not, store it in milk or saline.

3. Torn or broken teeth

  • Rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to control swelling. Save any piece of tooth and bring it to your appointment. Even if the pain seems manageable, a crack can lead to deep structural issues and should be investigated immediately.

4. Dental abscess

  • An abscess - often marked by inflammation, pus, or a foul taste in the mouth- is a severe infection that can spread to other parts of the body. If you suspect an abscess, contact us immediately. Never try to pop or drain it on your own.

 5. Luxurious filler

  • Although this may look modest, a filling or a lost crown can expose the inner tooth damage and decay. Try to keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side. Bring the crown or filling with you if you have it.

6. Injuries to soft tissues

  • Cuts or wounds inside the mouth should be gently cleaned. Apply pressure with a clean mist to control bleeding. If the bleeding is not stopped within 15 minutes, seek emergency dental care.
